I was excited to stumble upon your website in looking for a 2009 summer camp for my two sons, ages 10 and 12, but I must let you know that I’ve spent 10 minutes on your (poorly designed) webpage without being able to easily access information about your camps – where located, how much tuition is, etc. I’ll give it another shot but I must tell you that I’m not at all impressed with the design and usability of your webpage – in particular, since this is for a CyberCamp. Perhaps your webmaster can contact me for additional feedback. In the meantime, you may want to take another look at making it easier for folks to access information easily via your webpage.

      Hi Julie,
Thanks for posting info on my blog. My son, Scot, has attended Cybercamps for 1 week at UC Berkeley and 1 week at UCLA last year, and 2 years at UCLA the year before. Cybercamps is now known as Giant Campus, and they still have the same great camps. The blog you saw is my son’s blog, he and are are “action agents” which means we get the word out about Giant Campus. Here’s a link to the “official” Giant Campus website, and I hope you are able to find the info easily on the official site. My site is more of a novice hobby site, and I do take your concerns to heart. I really wish my site were as fabulous as the official site, so I feel I leave you in good, no – great! hands with this referral! (And please feel free to utilize the Giant Campus promo code “GiantCampus53″ for a discount in addition to any offered at the time of registration.) CLICK HERE: http://giantcampus.com/
I’ll “cc” some of the wonderful Giant Campus staff here to further assist you… I’m just the mom of a previous camper that accepted the challenge to get the word out about the camp, which from my experience is fantastic! And by the way, my son, who is 12 now, will be attending his 3rd summer sleepover camp with Giant Campus this summer, one week in UC San Diego and one week in UCLA!

Thanks for taking the time to offer some constructive suggestions!

Yippee Here’s a follow up from Julie, all’s well that ends well! First her email to me, with her permission to publish, then my response… I found the broken link to the Giant Campus website and fixed it, thanks Julie!

    Hello, Penny

Thank you very much for responding to me – and in such a friendly manner after my rather critical (wince!) comment regarding my inability to easily find the information that I was looking for on the Giant Campus website. For the record, I’m not very computer-savvy so that is a large part of the problem! I am glad to hear that your son enjoyed Cybercamps, and thanks for the link to the official site.

I ended up placing a call to the toll-free number to get more information regarding dates/tuition in the Washington, DC area. I’m a full-time working mother who needs to arrange 11 weeks of summer camp/daycare (yep – that’s weekly camp fees times 22!) for my two sons, aged 10 and 12. This one sounds great – especially after I read your glowing endorsement. Unfortunately, I found that the weekly cost of this camp at about $500 per kid – and the twice daily commute to the GMU campus from my workplace – was just too steep and inconvenient for me to send both kids. Perhaps we will be able to budget for it next summer.

Again, please accept my apology – to both you and your son – for sounding ungracious. It was extremely generous of you to take the time to follow up as you did. I hope that Scot enjoys his time at Giant Campus again this summer.

    Sincerely,

    Julie Connell

    And now my response:

    Hi Julie,

Oh cool! Glad you got back to me, no worries, I know the freebie wordpress site is a bit clunky! I’m glad you let me know that my link to the Giant Campus website was broken. It looked like the sentence was half-erased… Hmmm, the internet link-eater at it again! There’s probably a huge pile of broken links somewhere! I just fixed it and it works now, so it’ll be better for the next person.

As you can tell this site is a bit, well, amateur! After my son attended Cybercamps a few years ago they asked me if I would like to promote Cybercamps (now Giant Campus) and so my son and I created this website… We were actually very succesful last year referring over 150 people to Giant Campus! So clunky is ok, I guess! My son loved the game design classes, and he’s had 4 weeks at Giant Campus, I might have mentioned… (Too bad he didn’t take web design!!!)

I’ll share with you my personal story of why I promote Giant Campus… Summer before last my son’s father was in the hospital at UCLA for over 5 months and was considered terminal. (He did survive, he received a liver transplant!) It was awful, and my son was only 10… I took him every weekend to see his father and it was truly grim. When I asked my son what we could do to lighten things up – maybe go to Disneyland or Knotts Berry Farm, something like that – he said he wanted to go to UCLA to a computer camp! Well, I “googled it” not knowing what I’d find. (Probably you had that experience too.) and I found Cybercamps. Unfortunately I wanted to schedule a camp for the 2nd week in July and it was already the first week! When I explained this to Jared at Giant Campus he said no problem, and just increased the class size by one to squeek in my son! My hero! Then he said hold on, let me check something – and he came back on the line and told me that Microsoft had just paid the entire tuition for my son, room and board too!! What a huge blessing! So my son attended 2 weeks instead of one, (his grandmother paid for one week for him.) And he loved it! It was a rainbow in a very yucky storm, and it all turned out great!

So I hope you have a great experience with Giant Campus too, I encourage you to apply for tuition assistance! Lots of corporations sponsor partial or complete scholarships. Maybe one week would work out for you? And please do use my son’s promo code for a $10. discount! The promo code is “GiantCampus53″.You can tack this on in addition to any other discounts offered on the site. (http://giantcampus.com/)

    Thanks,
    Penny Gould
PS I hope it’s ok with you I’ll post these comments on the blog as a follow up… Readers always want to know if there’s a happy ending!!! : – )
